Sea Waves

Posted in Advanced Hydraulics with tags , , , on October 3, 2007 by civilengineer

It’s hard to find the exact definition that easily to be understand by students about sea waves.

Sea Waves is a temporal variation in fluid velocity which is propagated through fluid medium. The speed of propagation of such disturbance relative to the fluid is known as the wave celerity.

Wave celerity (C) is equal to wave velocity(v) so the unit is m/s

It has 2 types of waves:

1. Translatory waves – the water particles associated with the waves are transported with the wave and most important use in river hydraulics

2. Oscillators waves – the particle of water do not actually travel with the wave but tend to oscillate about a mean position as the wave passes

There also transformation of waves:

REFRACTION

Refraction is the bending of waves because of varying water depths underneath. The part of a wave in shallow water moves slower than the part of a wave in deeper water. So when the depth under a wave crest varies along the crest, the wave bends.

An example of refraction is when waves approach a straight shoreline at an angle. The part of the wave crest closer to shore is in shallower water and moving slower than the part away from the shore in deeper water. The wave crest in deeper water catches up so that the wave crest tends to become parallel to the shore.

DIFFRACTION

Diffraction usually happens when waves encounter surface-piercing obstacle, such as a breakwater or an island

Seeking truth of what is Drainage and Irrigation?

Posted in Drainage and Irrigation with tags , , , on October 1, 2007 by civilengineer

<<Assalamualaikum W.B.T>>

I’ve been offered this department for my internship that will begin 3rd December 2007- 23rd May 2008. Still thinking about to accept the offer or not. Contructor vs consultant? Which would give me best step for my future plans?

Seeking for the right choice, i search the information for this department. It’s more to stormwater management and popular standard use in malaysia is MASMA. In class we only been tought about it theoritically. So when it goes to design, i’m no nothing about it.

Then i found website about Jabatan Pengairan dan Saliran Malaysia (JPS). The contents are knowlegable for me as a beginner drainage engineer. However, the page cannot be cut and paste. The department sure know that there will be someone like me want to plagarise their content. It’s ok. I’ll definetely will find another source. That’s all.

What I know most of drainage would related to hydraulics. In hydraulics there is a chapter we learn about appropriate drainage. We not learn this chapter in class or it is not state in our syllibus. But it’s help me in the future because i want to end-up my life there, the Department of drainage and irrigation. Of course not for a long time. It just the beginning of my life.Enoughla..hopefully i can managed this blog full of information about civil engineering. Amin
